MORE POINTS FOR HEROIC PARKES AT MONZA
MORE POINTS FOR HEROIC PARKES AT MONZA
After missing the previous round of the World Superbike Championship at Assen with shoulder injuries, PBM Kawasaki team rider Broc Parkes bounced back in inimitable fashion to record a pair of points scoring rides at round five of the series which was held at Monza in Italy today.
Aboard the supercasino, Vent Axia and Kick Energy-backed Kawasaki World Superbike Racing Team Ninja ZX-10R, the 27-year-old Australian defied the pain to qualify in 13th place after Superpole to start from row four of the grid but following a great start in race one, the race was stopped due to a nasty turn one crash in which team-mate Makoto Tamada was involved and sustained a broken wrist as a result.
In the restart, Parkes circulated with the leading bunch and was as high as sixth at one point before settling for a superb 10th place at the flag to match his best result of the season. In race two, Parkes had to use his spare machine due to problems with his number one bike but despite not getting a good start, he battled to a fine 13th to round off a great weekend from his side of the garage.
Unfortunately, 32-year-old Tamada will miss at least next weekend's race in Kyalami.
Broc Parkes: "All up I had a great weekend especially seeing I came here and wasn't feeling 100% at all. Friday was a bit of a battle for me physically and I really did ask myself if I was ready to ride after my crash in Snetterton two weeks ago. I was still pretty sore all over but we stepped up in Saturday's qualifying and the bike felt really good and I was pretty happy to make second sector Superpole again and although we just missed out on the third row start, I was happy enough to be in 13th place again. In race one, I had a great start and I was with the front runners during the first few laps. The bike felt really good and I felt that I could have actually pushed up a few more places if I wasn't being held up at the beginning. Towards the end of the race we had a few issues with the bike and ran short of fuel on the last lap but I was really happy with a 10th place. Race two wasn't as easy as I started the race on my spare bike which I had hardly ridden all weekend. I also felt physically tired towards the end of the race so we were pretty lucky to finish in 13th and scored a few more points."
Makoto Tamada: "I struggled again to find a comfortable set-up during qualifying and was disappointed to have ended up in 23rd place on the grid. On Sunday morning we made some last minute changes and this was much better and I felt much more comfortable on the bike so I had a good feeling for the race. In the first corner I was pushed on to the gravel by another rider and had a big crash. I knew that I hurt my wrist pretty bad so I wasn't that surprised when they told me after an X-ray that it was broken. I was therefore out of race two and will also miss Kyalami next weekend which is a real shame for me and the team. I hope to be back in Miller as the break isn't so bad."
Paul Risbridger, Team Manager: "It's been a successful weekend overall with a few highs and lows in between. We had a difficult start on Friday with Broc struggling with fitness and with getting a good set-up but we saw a big step up in qualifying and we were very happy with our performance during Superpole once again. We still had some concerns on Sunday, mainly due to Broc's fitness, but he had a fantastic race one and showed how competitive the bike is. Although Broc struggled in race two towards the end due to his injuries, we still came away with our best points scoring weekend of the year. Makoto showed good pace during warm up on Sunday and it was very unfortunate for him to be taken out in race one as I feel it was a real opportunity for him to have scored some points this weekend."
The next round of the Hannspree World Superbike Championship takes place next weekend (May 15/17th) at Kyalami in South Africa. (www.worldsbk.com)

Australia's Casey Stoner eased to victory in the opening race of the MotoGP season in Qatar, with 2008 champion Valentino Rossi in second.
It was the 23-year-old Stoner's third consecutive win at the Losail International Circuit.
Jorge Lorenzo finished in third, while Britain's James Toseland finished in 16th and out of the points.
The floodlit race should have taken place on Sunday, but had to be cancelled because of heavy rain.
"I now feel I'm stronger than at the end of last year," said Stoner, the 2007 champion who is still recovering from wrist surgery last November.
"It is now time to keep it up, go for the next race and see what we can do. This is the best way to start the championship."
Eight-time world champion Rossi said: "Unfortunately I lost a bit of time after the start to fight with Loris [Capirossi] and Jorge [Lorenzo].
"I had to decide if I ride second or crash and I decided to slow down a bit. The second place is a good result for us and the start of the season is better than last year."
Stoner led from the start on Monday, while Yamaha rider and defending champion Rossi moved into second with 20 laps remaining and with a two second deficit on Stoner's Ducati.
Stoner managed to keep it at about the two second mark for the next three laps while Italy's Andrea Dovizioso and Rossi's team-mate Lorenzo had their own duel for third and were a further second adrift.
Suzuki rider Capirossi came to grief in spectacular fashion with 14 laps remaining, as with Colin Edwards challenging him for fifth spot he crashed and bounc ed several metres into the gravel before picking himself up gingerly to walk back to the pits.
Rossi brought the gap between him and Stoner down below the two second mark for the first time after nine laps of the 22 as the duo opened up a big gap between themselves and the rest of the field.
With 12 laps remaining Rossi had an eight second advantage over third-placed Lorenzo, but Stoner was not allowing his rival to close any further on him and with 10 laps to go he had almost a three second lead.
Stoner was up by three seconds with seven laps remaining, with Rossi seemingly powerless to do anything about it, but the eight-time world champion was by that stage nearly 15 seconds ahead of Lorenzo.
With three laps remaining Stoner's lead stood at more than five seconds and he cantered home to victory to land the first blow of what promises to be a thrilling battle for the title.
Qatar's Losail International Circuit, the only night-time event on the MotoGP calendar, became the first race in 29 years to be postponed due to bad weather when heavy rain lashed down on Sunday.
Saturday's qualifying had already been difficult with dust, sand and wind, while the 250cc and 125cc races on Sunday were shortened because of rainfall and visibility problems.
“Motorcycle racer looks to return to winning ways in 2009”
The 2009 motorcycle racing championships are about to start across the UK and Chris Morley plans to win one. Competing in the hotly contested Formula 400 class, Chris Morley, backed by Proppa.com and pictured here at Oulton Park, is hoping he can build on a good 2008 which saw him finish second and third in a number of races.
Last year saw Chris return to bike racing having previously competed in the British Championships, when he was widely considered to have a very bright future in bike racing. At one stage he was the youngest rider in Suzuki GB’s factory race team before being sidelined by injuries.
Chris says: “We have a very competitive bike this year, the Proppa.com Yamaha FZR400SP, and we are going into the season brimming with confidence. It is our intention to start the year with a win, although we realise that there will be at least thirty five competitors on the grid all hoping to do the same."
For spectators, club racing makes good sense, representing a great day out at some of the major circuits and full access to the teams for a fraction of the cost of attending a British Championship round.
Chris is racing at Tonfanau on Sunday 12 April and Oulton Park Saturday 18 April. If you are still considering what to do over the Easter period then why not come along. Find him in the paddock and say hello.
